This is a long day, but relatively easy.
We had planned to lunch in Ashton Court, but the cafe shut when we got there and there were few options until Chepstow.
The section of the route from Ashton Court to the Severn Bridge is flat, but pretty grim. The part along the River Avon is also a poor surface and would be unpleasant on a road bike, especially in the wet.
A route through Bristol itself may be more interesting, but also busier and hillier.
Once across the Severn the route is great, particularly past Tintern Abbey and along the beautiful Wye Valley.
Riding along the Wye we had originally planned to leave the A466 where it crosses at Bigweir Bridge. This was in order to minimise our use of this major road. In fact the road was relatively quiet, and really fast, so we stayed on the A466 all the way to Monmouth.
