Day Nine: Lancaster to Ambleside

Distance: 63.6 km / 39.5 mi

Climbing: 736 m / 2414 feet

Notes

The picture is Morecambe Bay, part of the beautiful, but oft-forgotten, Lancastrian coast.

It felt good to be leaving Orwell's dystopic Lancastrian towns well behind us for Wainwright's idyllic Lake District.

The amount of climbing on paper flatters (or perhaps flattens) the nature of that transition, however, as it is much hillier than might otherwise be expected.

This is a good route, though, with lots of traffic free sections (at least until Windermere from where care has to be taken as you compete with cars between the Lakes' honeypot towns). It also passes through the half-way point on the route as a whole, where you cross a branch of the Lancaster canal at Stainton.
